Willowdale Estate Wedding: Floral Design for Sara & Justin!

Ok, this blog is long overdue.  Last September, we had the privilege of being a part of a wedding for one of the coolest couples EVER.  Sara and Justin got married at Willowdale Estate on a beautiful summer day and it couldn’t have been more amazing. We loved the couple from the moment we met them. Sara is a nurse and Justin is a doctor. They both shared a love for Pike’s Place Market in Seattle (Justin’s from that area) and Sara’s wedding planning binder blew our minds! ;)  We talked floral design and learned about her love for all things anemones, ranunculus, burlap and pinterest.  Justin was liking the idea of ferns for his pin-on, since ferns were the official green of his hometown. And his mom was a florist. We just adored them.  Later in the summer, we took Sara and her mom (LOVE HER!) to the flower market in early August to pick flowers for the big day. It was so much fun, we wanted to hang out with them forever.  And, they invited us to stay for their cocktail hour at the wedding – could this couple get any better? UM..actually.. YES they could..read on!

On the wedding day, Moira arranged the flowers. As soon as I walked into the studio, I screamed. I just knew in my heart Sara would love everything.  Moira had wrapped our farm bottles in burlap and packed our burlap table runners for the big day. The flowers were bright shades of purples, greens and yellows.

When we got to the wedding, Sara was enjoying every minute of the big day and was overjoyed when she saw the flowers. And at the same time, we just LOVED seeing all the little details Sara did herself (check out the adorable burlap banners!) and her dress was phenomenal.  We were thrilled to grab a bacon wrapped scallop or two and a hug from the couple before we headed home for the night.  The next morning, we got a call from Sara – a long and loving message about how wonderful the flowers were. We couldn’t believe she went above and beyond to call us on the day after her wedding! So yes, this couple truly couldn’t get any better.  Wait, they could.  Now, even a year later, Sara is constantly supporting Whim and checking in.  She stopped in and bought a centerpiece during our Thanksgiving flower sale & food drive, wrote a Yelp review that brought us to tears AND sent us a text to check in after the Boston Marathon bombings.

Justin + Sara – this blog may be long overdue, but what’s even more overdue?  A dinner or drink together soon!!  xoxoxo  - Nat & Moira

Boston Wedding at the Taj Rooftop | Flowers & Hanging Candles for Alyssa & Andy

We were just going through the archives, and realized..WHAT? We never  blogged about Alyssa and Andy’s wedding at the Taj?!  Granted, this wedding happened when Whim was just a wee baby in our first year. We probably didn’t even know how to blog back then. Better late than never, right?

Alyssa and Andy’s wedding was planned by our gal Kelli  at Swank Events. and Moira handled the floral design. The bride knew she didn’t want a heavy floral wedding, so Moira suggested going with a more candle heavy look, to create a soft glow without going over the top. She worked with Kelli to come up with the perfect candles/flowers  to compliment the style elements Kelli was incorporating. Some tables featured candle centerpieces, others featured smaller centerpieces with bright pops of pink and green. And our personal fav? Moira was able to hang candles from the rafters, which glowed softly as the sun went down in the city. Ahh…perfection.

A big thanks to Kelli at Swank for asking us to be a part of Alyssa & Andy’s big day! We adore these photos by Joe Prezioso Photography

On a Whim: Wedding Details & Boston Flower Market Fun

This is the story of how we wooed Matt & Steph with flowers…

By now you know a ton about our design for Matt & Steph’s big day. So, last week, I met with Steph to go over the wedding day timeline. I loved that she was wearing her Radiohead tshirt, and was ready with her notebook and seating plan. She’ll tell you she’s all over the place with the wedding planning, but she’s got her shiz together. We ordered some coffee and got to work on a timeline. Easy breezy. I’m not sure what I love more, that they’re getting married by a great friend and fellow meat lover, that they’re being introduced into the cocktail hour(“Who would want to miss that?!”)…OR that her son is playing a guitar solo in the middle of dinner…or that the cake has figurines of their family in pajamas?!

After the timeline, I oohed and ahhed over their engagement pics for a bit. Seriously, awesome. Yaritza Colon rocks. See more pics here.

Then, a week later, we met Steph, her son Drew and Matt at the flower market so Moira could get a sense of their style. We must say, Matt was officially our first client ever to stretch before hitting the market. He’s a Sports and Conditioning Coach – so it only makes sense he gets psyched up, right? ;)

The flower market conclusions: the deep purple calla lily and burgundy dahlia still reign supreme…Among a few other sweet textures and wine inspired colors.

And get this: Moira’s ordered 95 glass vases for the big day..in a variety of sizes. YES. 95 vases.  For a serious glow at the ceremony and reception. We’re pretty sure Florence and the Machine would be jealous of this unplugged show.

In other news, Jen’s working diligently on the Band Poloroid table names. Here’s a teaser.

Oh Oh! And, I ordered the vinyl records for guests to sign, which came in today. There is a bit of a surprise involved, so I won’t give it away, but we can’t wait for Steph and Matt to see.

Other than that, we’ve got T-5 days to go….and we can’t wait for this day. We’re putting in our song request now.

xoxo,

Nat & the Whim Crew

Boston Wedding at the Lenox Hotel – Colleen & Tristan

We met Colleen at a coffee shop to chat about her big day in May.  She was a Harvard law student, waiting patiently for her fiance Tristan to return to the states from his home in British Columbia.  We instantly loved her witty nature and her wedding organization skills. She adored peonies, roses and hydrangea (I mean really, what more could a girl ask for – love and peonies?!) and wanted a soft and romantic feel at the Lenox. We loved her even more when she told us she had always dreamed of having a huge fluffy bouquet.  She and Moira bonded over Pride & Prejudice and all things romantic.

When we took Colleen to the market, she gravitated towards all things fluffy – pale pinks, whites and soft grey dusty miller. And she loved flowering dogwood branches – which we later found out were the official flower of British Columbia! Coincidence? We think not. ;) Using this as inspiration, Moira decided on 3 distinct styles of centerpieces to draw guests attention around the room and match the vibe at the Lenox.  One the wedding day, Moira filled her bouquet with peonies from France. It was going to be a great day.

The wedding day was everything and more. Our favorite moment was when Colleen threw her arms around Tristan as they saw each other for the first time. Our second favorite moment? Colleen brought her bouquet on her honeymoon. She just couldn’t bear to leave it behind.  =)

Colleen & Tristan..we’re smitten. Congrats!

Twofer Tuesday: Cupcakes & wedding videos. Is there anything sweeter?

When we find a local artist or designer we love, we get a little obsessed. ;)  And on this Tuesday, we’re feeling lots of love!

Hannah Persson is one of our favorite photographers. We fell in love with her super energetic personality, her hip photography style and her SWEET wedding music videos, which will surely have you shedding tears of joy for couples you don’t even know.  (Seriously, we spent an entire night watching the videos, drinking wine and wishing we were partying with the bride and groom-  don’t judge!). This lady has some serious talent, and we are  psyched to work with her for a second time this upcoming summer in Vermont!  http://hannahperssonphoto.com/

For your viewing pleasure (wine optional):

If that’s not sweet enough, we have to highlight our dear friend and cupcake chef Victoria over at Cakeology.  Victoria and I met a few years ago and she’s fantastic!  This year, I was psyched to see her win the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars! With her new storefront in downtown Boston, she’s rocking it with unique flavors like Fluffernutter, Almond Joy, and Chocolate Chip Pancake.  Cupcake snobs take note: these cupcakes are amazing and will NOT disappoint.  Plus, Cakeology delivers – in a bright yellow truck with Bruce the Panda on the side!  Love it!  Brides to be, try for yourself. Book a tasting: http://cakeology.com/

x’s and o’s,

Whim

Jori & Sean’s Somerville Wedding: Hurricane Irene Meets Her Match!

Looking at these photos, you would never guess that Jori and Sean’s colorful nuptials happened during the downpours of Hurricane Irene.  But that didn’t stop this awesome couple and their guests from having a blast!  The couple’s quirky and casual style made for a super fun and super relaxed day for everyone involved.  Jori and Sean are all about keeping it local, so it made perfect sense for them to have their wedding reception at Bloc 11 in Somerville,  steps from their Union Square home. And when we heard that Redbones BBQ was catering, we knew it was our kind of party!  Moira arranged the flowers and I was the day of coordinator, and we were thrilled to be involved!  We adored the DIY elements the bride’s mother created; from gingham table squares and tea lights, to personalized wine charm favors.  The bride’s father married the couple, the groom’s sister sang a heartfelt song at the ceremony, and each family member blessed the rings with warm wishes for the couple.   We don’t care what the weatherman said, it really was a beautiful day.
